What are good kid book club ideas?

I'm in a book club and need ideas to do with books like drawings of the characters ect...What are good kid book club ideas?
Write a diary entry as a character.

Make readers theater out of good parts.

Book-a-roni Pizza -- construction paper cut into a circle. Make a collage about the book one one side. Tell about your favorite part on the back.

Make a movie poster for your book. What are good kid book club ideas?
You can read the Harry Potter series. You can sort the kids into houses (Gryphindor, Slytheirn, Revenclaw, etc.) and award points. In the end of the year you can have a big celebration and anounce who wins the house cup. Things you can do with harry potter are so limitless. You can watch the movies, draw the characters and creatures, dress up as wizards and witches, make pumpkin juice and chocolate frogs, you can play outdoor "quidditch", etc.

If you get to the fourth book you can have a triwizard tournament!!!!

Hope this helps

Can an employer force unwork related book club upon employees?

A local employer that is a auto dealership. Is making their male employees read a book about football. Then, every week they must talk about what they read in a sort of "book report". Is this legal?? The owner is not taking "NO" for an answer with employers and keeps calling them into his office on why they are not participating. Can an employer force unwork related book club upon employees?
Sounds like a team building exercise.

Of course he can't. BUt in the real world, employment is at will; failing to participate in a team building exerecise is not only a legal reason to fire, it might even be enough to deny unemployment.

Read the damm book. It's not the most unreasonable thing you'll be asked to do by a bossCan an employer force unwork related book club upon employees?
As long as the employer gives the employees time to read the book at work it is 100% legal. If he requires them to do so at home, it is 100% illegal.

If he's a private employer with only a few employees, there aren't many laws protecting the workers however.

If he is forcing them to work "off the clock" by reading the book or preparing the report, then he should be reported to the department of labor in your area. Can an employer force unwork related book club upon employees?
no, he cannot do that. He is not a licenced teacher....duh

  • What should I serve at book club?

I'm hosting book club for 7-10 woman at the end of January. We read Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler. It's nice to have a few appetizers sitting out that don't need to be kept hot and won't go bad after 2 hours. I love to cook and would like something more unique than artichoke dip :) Also, any drink suggestions (I'm pregnant as is one other member, but the others love an alcoholic drink). What should I serve at book club?
From what you said, you like to cook and you want something unusual. Probably not a cheese tray. Here are some great appetizers I've fixed and love. Something sweet and something salty! I would just pick up red and white wine to go with it. Have fun!

    1. Goug猫res -- the best cheese puffs you've ever tasted. Goug猫res are best served warm, so pipe them at the last minute and bake them just before your guests arrive. They're also good at room temp.

    2. Goat Cheese, Roasted Pepper and Basil Appetizers --The combination of marinated goat cheese, roasted peppers and fresh basil is perfect in its simplicity. Served on baguettes.

    3. Ginger-Mascarpone Icebox Cake - make this the day before - it's a cheesecake with an unusual twist. The ginger will be good for the pregnant women - good for nauseous
It is always nice to see veggie trays along with finger sandwiches. Those are pretty standard.

But you can also cut up cheese or set up a nice cheese tray with diffrent types of cheeses and maybe some meat.

Arrange crackers/bread on another platter this will look nice as well.

Keep it simple so you don't become over worried about the food and aren't able to enjoy your guests! Simple is more Elegant! What should I serve at book club?
I think you should bake banana bread, bring in some bananas, maybe some banana cream. Have a Banana Bonanza Book club!!! if someone doesn't like bananas, choose a different fruit! and always bring in a healthy cereal or oatmeal. I hope this helps, and I hope it get chose for the best answer!!!

C YA!!!!! OH!! drinks... bring in some Tropicana or milk. Some kidda drink, that will keep them healthy and in shape.
Make cucumber sandwiches. Have some crackers, cheese and meat available. You could also try making some devilled eggs. Olives and pickles are good too. What should I serve at book club?
Finger sandwiches, pigs in a blanket, Rolled ham and cheese slices, meatballs in sauce, chilli.. You could make punch, one spiked and one plain.
Is Breathing Lessons the book set in Baltimore? If so, how about Baltimore food? Crab cakes, a Lady Baltimore cake (white cake with fruit and nut filling, frosted with whipped cream.) Our book club has had fun trying to fit the food to the book we've read. There are six of us; we each bring something (appetizer, desserts, etc., with the hostess supplying the entree and beverages. We've done Chinese food for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Afghani food for The Bookseller of Kabul, etc, etc.

Don't you just love the mental stimulus of being in a book club? It

is the highlight of my month.
Finger sandwitched, tea, and petit fours.
Tea, whether cold or hot, biscotti or breakfast cookies, for the health aspect of it all go to whole foods, get little finger sandwiches, stay basic, salmon spread, with crackers, I say tea and biscotti

Definitely finger-type foods that aren't greasy. Fruit/veggie trays are always good. Maybe cheese and crackers partnered up with a good wine. Maybe some baby quiches you find in the freezer section.

Sangria is a fun alcoholic drink. Or look up some of the girly cocktails. Maybe mimosas (OJ and champagne) or bellinis (champagne and peach schnaups, often with pureed frozen peaches - use sparking grape juice for a non-alcoholic version)

Scones and tea sandwiches are classic. (Cucumber sandwiches, beet and soft cheese, ham, PBJ)

Cookies maybe. Crab rangoons. Pigs in blankets ( I love those guys).

    Hope this helps

Good games and activities for a book club (reading The Alchemist)?

  • What are good books for middle school girls and moms for a mother-daughter book club?

Since 7th graders get a big amount of homework and the moms and girls would only have a month to read the book it would need to be around 200 pages. It has to be appropriate for the mom's to let the girls read, but it also has to be appealing to the girls. What are good books for middle school girls and moms for a mother-daughter book club?
    I can help you out.

first is Lois Duncan. She writes scary stories and although they are older (published around the 80's) but still good

I read them when I was that age and still read her stories in highschool. They only have around 200 or 300 pages but the books are small in size. The ones I like the most are Stranger With My Face, Down A Dark Hall, and Dont look behind You.

Oh My Gods And Goddess Boot Camp by Tara Lynn Childs. Its Currently a two book series and is about the ancient greek gods. The Main Character is 18 but its not bad for younger audiences. I checked on amazon and Oh My Gods is grades 7 and up. Goddess Boot Camp is grades 9 and up mainly because there is kissing and boyfriend girlfriend related stuff, but i am pretty sure (99.9%) that it has no innapropriate s things even mentioned. (pages 288 and 272)

Also by Tara Lynn Childs is Forgive My Fins. Its rated grades 6-10. Its a cute romance about A mermaid who comes to live on land with her aunt (her mother a human, father a merman) and finds someone to bond with, the only problem being that she needs to get him to realize that he loves her. But then something big goes wrong, well i dont want to spoil the story but this book is amazing..(pages 304)

The Forest Of Hands And Teeth by Carrie Ryan. I Have not read this one but my sister in 7th grade has, so it cant be bad for them to read. I guess it would be called a sci- fi. Amazon Has a good review for it: http://www.amazon.com/Forest-Hands-Teeth鈥?/a> (pages 336)

Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras By Scott Westerfield. Their are 4 books in this series know as the Uglies Series. Its a SciFi about a Girl named Tally. In this world, everyone is Pretty, and no one is normal. Everyone gets the operation when they turn 16. Tallys best friend has the operation 3 months before her, and while they are apart, Tally meets a new friend Shay who turns pretty the same day as her. But the day before their operation, Shay goes missing, and its Tallys job to find her or she will never get the operation, which shes been dreaming about her whole life. Its set far in the future, with hover boards and everything. The books are a little longer than 200-300 but they are very good and if you ever get the chace your book club should read them.

The Secret Under My Skin by Janet McNaughton is another great scifi. Its is about a future where environmental conditions are dire. Everyone struggles to survive throught it all. Blay is the main character of this story. She cant remember where she is from or anything about her parents. She was taken from her parents when she was just a baby. She was taken in by a older girl living on the streets and lived with her until she was around 7 or 10. She struggles on the streets until she arrives at a work camp. My review isnt very good%26lt; i havent read this story in a while and cant remember everything. (pages 351 but its smaller in size.)

Runaway by Wendelin Van Draanen. Its the journal of a young girl Holly, a foster child. Although it doesnt say it, I believe she just wants to fit in a school but she has always been made fun of for as long as she can remember. Its a very hard book for me to review, but its a great book. "Hollys run away before, but this time she actually gets away-and what feels like an escape at first soon becomes a daily struggle for survival. She is smart and resourceful, and manages to make it all the way across the country on her own. But how long can this go on? It getting Harder and Harder to avoid the truth-Holly is now homeless.

Runaway is a riveting portrait of a girl just young and stubborn and nive enough to hold out for finding a better place in the world to be." AmaZon review:http://www.amazon.com/Runaway-Wendelin-V鈥?/a>

What is the best way to make new friends and get to know my neighbors? Is starting a book club a good idea?

I live in a big apartment complex, I've lived here nearly a year and I'd really like to meet my neighbors and make some friends. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What about a book club? What is the best way to make new friends and get to know my neighbors? Is starting a book club a good idea?
    Have a party..don't like parties. ..Have a wine tasting...don't drink..have a foreign film night..really like books..start a book club.
book club? just walk up to them and talk to themWhat is the best way to make new friends and get to know my neighbors? Is starting a book club a good idea?
bake some cookies, go to each house and present a get together on a certain day with a card in it with a personal greeting face to face.. just to bring something if they would like it, whatever it may be.. just talk, say hi, make food, have some entertainment... book club is a good idea, tupperware parties are good too.. have fun
One of the best ways to get to know your neighbors is to bring over something that has been baked. Tell them that you have leftovers and that you cannot eat it all. Do it a couple of times and that will open doors quickly.

Always greet them with a smile and sincerity. Let them know that you are interested in their lives. Assist them when you see an opportunity.

A book club is a good idea, but not everyone likes to read. Just observe them and see what their interests are. If you have similar ones, then you are on the right track. What is the best way to make new friends and get to know my neighbors? Is starting a book club a good idea?
It depends on the education of your neighbors.

I personally would be bored by a book club because I work so much, I really dont have the opportunity to read anything other than the competency materials I have to study to keep my job.

I would be more inclined to show up if you invited me over for hordeurvs and drinks or maybe invite me over to watch a movie or just to try some authentic cuisine such as indian food or mexican. Maybe have a neighborhood party and invite everyone to come over at say 9 PM and BYOB and I bet you get guests.
I think a community pitch in or cook out would be more effective. You could hook up with the property management and involve them in it. They could help plan other activities to go with it as well.
Good luck. It's not easy to make friends when you live in an apartment. People living in apartments are very transient.

If I were invited to join a book club with the neighbors I wouldn't hesitate to join. It sounds like fun.
Is there a tenants organization? This may open up avenues for you. Does your building hold neighborhood watch meetings?

Write up a flyer asking for a show of interest from tenants in a book club and put it in peoples letter boxes or in your lobby (Are you a bookworm?). Check to see what type of interest it might generate. Use a cell phone number and set up an email account for people to contact you. I'd avoid using my home phone and main email address for security sake.

Good Luck with your book club! I hope it is a great success.

Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?

I am interested in starting a book/poetry club to discuss good books/poems, to meet new people, and have outings maybe once every 3 months. (Ranging from a day at the spa to eating out). I was thinking that maybe once a month each person could contribute $20-25 for the book club savings fund for when we do go out. Is this a reasonable idea or do anybody else have a better suggestion(s)?Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?
Sounds like a good idea. Just make sure you don't make the contributions too high or interest will drop off. Be sure to tell friends/family with interests similar to yours for starters. Most major bookstore chains have a public bulletin board advertising book clubs. Ask the manager of yours if he'd be willing to reserve you a spot for your flier. Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?
If everybody is contributing the same amount, it may be just as easy for them to pay for themselves. This often cuts back on some hard feelings as well. The outings could be book related too. For example, discussing Memoirs of a Geisha at a Japanese Restaurant or a trip to the museum for the DaVinci Code. Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?
I'd ask my friends if they were interested...and ask them to ask their friends. I would not collect money, but would maybe do dinner/snacks/or wine at the host's house... what is served could complement the setting/plot of the book.

Help on what to do during a twilight book club?

i am starting a book club for my friends and its all twilight. i need ideas on what to do. like obviously we read the book and discuss it but i also need fun activites involving the book. mabe like a game or somthing? so much help appreciated!Help on what to do during a twilight book club?
Make up situations, then play "What would Edward do?" in the situation. Maybe make up two sets of cards, one with the situations and one with each of the characters. So you draw a situation card and a character card and say what that character would do in that situation.

Read parts of the book aloud. Each person take a character in the scene, and someone read the narrative parts.

    Well...

My twilight club always has debates on who is better for Bella- Jacob or Edward.

I think that your club should just make as many puzzles and games as possible and you are sure to have a great time. My club also has ideas of character dress-up. We each have a "twilight name" where we are each a character from the book, and whenever we are in the club meeting we adress eachother by that name. Those are just a few fun tips to make you Twilight club more exciting.Help on what to do during a twilight book club?
You could do trivia and quizzes and like compete with a Team Edward and a Team Jacob. Also you could do something for Halloween (costumes maybe). Character discussions would be cool. You could spend a day making Twilight Club t-shirts and designate a day to wear them. The possibilities are endless. Hope you have fun!!
role playing could be cool (i have yet to find fans as dedicated as i am to do so, but i did a bit with a friend in history class and it was cool)

also get into the wars with team edward/jacob and see who can list the most reasons why their team pwnsHelp on what to do during a twilight book club?

Sorry for correcting your first question. It's a bad habit of mine. I majored in English and sometimes I get carried away. I also make mistakes.

    Book Clubs/Book Discussions online?!?

Do you know where I can find a decent book discussion message board or group online!?Book Clubs/Book Discussions online?!?
    http://www.bookclub.com

Here the deal is getting good deals for purchasing books; I see nothing among the very many 'clubs' that mention discussing the books online.

    http://www.bookdiscussion.com

This is a gimmick, really, but at least people discuss books, on the radio as guests or as callers. You may want to read their brief homepage.

    http://www.readerscircle.org

Not a gimmick and not a 'sell,' but though I didn't hit the FAQs as I should have (suggest you do; it's in tiny print at the bottom), it seems this group organizes and helps organize book clubs for the discussion of written material all over several countries. It only mentions 'phone chats' and regular book discussion clubs though, that I saw... not online.

I kept at it for a while, trying to make links to what you request, and so far can't do it. I will hope someone already in such a group will chime in with a better answer. (Don't worry about the links above; my computer tells me immediately if anything is wrong with a link.)

    ADD: http://www.LibraryThing.com

Since this site mentions membership, I think it isn't free, but it may be. Try it out, and thumbs up for the answer with this link.Book Clubs/Book Discussions online?!?
    Try goodreads.comBook Clubs/Book Discussions online?!?
Check out LibraryThing.com. It has many many book discussions going on at any given time. It's a terrific site in other ways as well.

Anyone know of any online book clubs?

    Here is the list:

What should I do about starting a book club at my school?

I love to read and I would love discussing ideas and theories with other people at my school. So how would I go about it and what are some potential book ideas? Preferably young adult and I've already read the Twilight Saga :) It will be co-ed. Any ideas? What should I do about starting a book club at my school?
put up flyers around your school (after asking your principal) and tell your student council president to help you spread the word. ask if you can make an announcement over the intercom in the morning about your club. this should be plenty of publicity to get the ball rolling. i would start out having meetings in your library/lounge after school on a strict day and time. immediately after school would be best since people wouldn't have to leave school and come back. GOOD LUCK!

and as for book ideas i would ask your friends what books they are most interested in.What should I do about starting a book club at my school?
your student council should have a form for you to fill out. all you would need is an adult sponsor most likely.

if your student council doesn't. talk to the english teachers at your school. im sure they would love to see a book club get off the ground.

good luckWhat should I do about starting a book club at my school?
Make flyers and pass them out to all the teachers

    Teachers love to support reading

If you have a school paper?

meet with the senior editor and ask him to print a blurb in the next edition
You should ask one of the english teachers to help you get your book club started. I think a good book to start with would be "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins.

  • How to join a book club?

I want to join a book club, but don't know how. Please help me and give some advice.

    Thanks you.

:)How to join a book club?
Many book stores and libraries have book clubs that meet there, or may have postings about clubs elsewhere in the community.

Once you have some contact information, you can ask about what kind of books they tend to specialize in, and go to a few meetings to see if you like it. Most of the time, they are pretty informal, so you will not feel obligated to come back if you don't want to. Also, people in one club often know about or even belong to several other clubs, and can give you some ideas. How to join a book club?
Try checking with your local library. They usually have book groups. How to join a book club?
Here are a few things that have helped me find local book clubs:

    1) Search Cragislist (works only if you live in a major metro area that has its own site)

    2) Search the Yahoo Groups website or Meetup.com

    3) Ask about it at your local library or book store

    Good luck!
I'd just start one! that way you get to choose the books and paln around your scheldule just ask a bunch of your friends to read the book and come to your house to discuss it.

(if your worried about convinceing them to come then just tell them there will be just a short discussion at the beginning and then a party)

Book clubs??? anybody know any book clubs ???

those book clubbs where they send you like 5 books for one dll or something like that. they ship books and stuff. thanksBook clubs??? anybody know any book clubs ???
After your initial purchase you'll get a book every month in the mail and if you don't want what they send, you have to return it. It's a big hassle. You can almost never get off their mailing list in your entire lifetime.

Try joining a bookswap group online instead.'Book clubs??? anybody know any book clubs ???
i remember specifically the history book club, trying searching for it on yahoo. there's also a "paperback book club", and like the other person said, once you join one, they'll send you BUNCHES more.

Where could a book club get free paper copies of books?

We do NOT want free e-books, and it would be great if there was also free shipping. Just the link to the site or something along those lines would be great. Also, we don't mind having to enter contest in order to get these free books. Thank you so much!-The Lit Circle of Sisterhood Book ClubWhere could a book club get free paper copies of books?
Nothing in life is free silly.Where could a book club get free paper copies of books?
IF there is a really good reason for needing free copies (like if you're working with homeless children), you could ask for donations from the publisher or your local bookstore or ask for a small grant from a charity or religious organization to buy books.

Otherwise, there is the library and used book stores.

Are tacos and book clubs mutually exclusive?

No, I know a couple of men in book clubs, too. (I am assuming by 'taco', you are referring to the female anatomy.) And, yes, those men are heterosexual. Book clubs are merely exclusive to people who like to read and discuss what they've read with other literate humans. Are tacos and book clubs mutually exclusive?

What are some good chapter books for an upper elementary book club?

I'd like chapter books that are in paperback and are age-appropriate for 3rd-6th graders. Cussing and sexual content should be kept to a minimum if at all. Classics are probably out of the question b/c I don't want to step on the toes of teachers. So far I've got The Secret Apartment, The Landry News, The War with Grandpa, and The Watsons Go to Birmingham. If you're a middle schooler who has some books you really like(d), I'd love your opinion. Same thing for parents and book lovers in general. :) Thanks! What are some good chapter books for an upper elementary book club?

For 3rd graders (and maybe 4th), the Junie B. Jones books by Babara Park are really cute and funny. My daughter is going into 3rd grade this year and loves them. The Bailey School Kids series and Magic Tree House books are also very good and educational. All of these are easier chapter books. My daughter also loves another series called Puppy Pals that the younger of these kids may like. What are some good chapter books for an upper elementary book club?

Whales on Stilts by M. T. Anderson

    The Boxcar Children by Warner

    The Judy Moody Books
Well I'd recommend Princess Diaries series and The Borrowers

Sabrina the Teenage Witch are some great series as well

    The Listmaker

    Teen Power Inc.

    Harry Potter
How about any of the series of Tree House Mysteries? Or 4th grade Rats? Or A-Z mysteries? OR Pee-Wee Scouts? Or how about any of the Henry %26amp; Mudge series? OR the Junie B. Jones series? Or Bunnicula? These are all books that my kids loved to read %26amp; also books that I see kids take out of our public school library. I ordered alot of these kinds of books through the school (the kids would bring home these little paper flyers about every 6 weeks or so).....through Troll Books %26amp; Scholastic Books. Hope this helps. :)

The Ghost Cadet by Elaine Marie Alphin (about a boy discovering family honor and a famous Civil War battle),

How exactly does one start a Book Club?

I currently have about 5 people and am waiting on a couple more. So do you have the meetings once a month? Is that enough time for everyone to read the book -- I mean we do all have jobs. And then I guess we take turns hosting it? How do we decide who hosts and when? Anyone who ever started one up and has any advise, I'd appreciate it. What did you do that didn't work and what did you do that did?

Also, being that we're just getting started and we don't know who has read what, I thought we should start with a newly released book? Any suggestions on good newly released books? How exactly does one start a Book Club?
If and when you decide to start your own group, your first task is to recruit members. Think about how many people you want to participate. The size will likely be dictated by the place where the group meets. If you plan on hosting meetings in your own living room, for example, you may find it difficult to accommodate more than seven or eight members. On the other hand, if your group is too small, discussion may suffer, especially if you don't have perfect attendance at each meeting. Many book clubs recruit solely from friends or coworkers, but you don't need to stop there. Posting flyers at your local public library is an excellent way to foster diversity in your members and meet new people.

Once you have a solid group of people together, it's time to set some guidelines for your group. It is a good idea to do this at your first meeting. How often will the group meet? Most book clubs typically meet once a month and discuss one book per meeting. Decide on a process for choosing the books you will read. Be sure to set a consistent time and place for meetings, so that you do not have to go through the process of scheduling each meeting. Make it clear to members that they are expected to plan their schedule around your set time, not vice versa. While the living room is the obvious choice for a place to meet, you should also consider such places as a library, restaurant, or community center.

Once you have recruited members and established guidelines for your book club, it is time to focus on the actual discussions. If you are serious about having quality discussion and are willing to invest some money in your book club, you may want to consider hiring a professional leader to moderate meetings. Not only will a leader help insure that a fulfilling, balanced conversation takes place, but he or she will also help your group decide which books to read (or even choose the books for you). A good way to find a discussion group leader would be to contact your local public library or college.

If you choose to not hire a professional leader, you should be prepared to guide the discussion yourself. An excellent starting place for a particular book would be a reading group guide. If no guide is available for the book you are currently reading, you may wish to turn to some general questions and topics for discussion.

To be sure, planning and running your own book club can be a challenge. But if done properly, your book club will prove to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for you and your peers.

this is the artical i used to start my book club we just read "sharp objects" it was a really good book

Hope this helpsHow exactly does one start a Book Club?
Book club host changes every month. Whoever came up with the riginal idea, shoudl host the 1st month. Everyone should bring a munchie or beverage. In order to figure out who hosts next..just ask the group someone will volunteer..or pick out of hat..Picking a book is easy, the first month pick a bestseller, but also pick a book that may be in paperback or on the trade shelves...Hard cover can cost $20-30 dollars..no need spend that kind of money every month. At that first meeting the next host should bring along a few books and you can all vote on what you will read next...

As for discussing the book, that usually lasts about a 1/2 hour and then people discuss their cheating husbands and ashole bosses for awhile, drink a few bottles of wine..eat some crab dip...then go home. have fun!!How exactly does one start a Book Club?
Here's what my book club does...we have kind of evolved and learned what works for us thru trial and error...

we meet once a month at a bar or coffee shop- we like somewhat quiet places with couches/comfy seating! We usually go to this one bar that is more like a lounge and not very crowded mid week. Or, we go to a coffee shop with comfy seating and a fireplace!

We have recently started having the members choose books according to the abc order of their first name, so it rotates and everyone gets a chance to choose- one of the best things about a book club is reading a book you never would have read on your own and really loving/appreciating it.

we have also recently joined Yahoo groups, where we have a page open only to members (5 or 6 of us, although anyone is welcome to join us) where we have a database of books we've read and where we met and books we would like to read

also, some people can't come every month- and that's Ok too- we also have taken a hiatus a couple of times, like in the summer or over the holidays-when we skip a month, we have a book swap, where we trade books we already own so we have somethign to read over the break.

you may want to pick a certain day, like third thursdays of the month, so people always know when the meeting is and you don't have to try to work around everyone's schedule- you'll never be able to keep everyone happy all the time!

good luck - it is so much fun!

oh, and here are some ideas for good reading...

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards

Girl with the pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

    Night by Elie Wiesel

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

The Memory Keeper's Daughter is the newest one I can remember! We are getting ready to read 'Saving Fish From Drowning' by Amy Tan, which is new, but I can't say yet if it's good or not!
I started a book club about 2 years ago. We meet the last week of the month on Wednesday nights at 6:30. The person that picks the book hosts. I would suggest you have less than 10 members if you plan to meet at member's homes. At the end of our 7 member rotation, we have a members vote. I bring 3-4 books to the group that have been made into a movie and we vote on which we want to read. Then, we go to the movie and out for dinner. Don't worry about who had read what. Just let the host pick and someone can reread if they already read it. If you pick new releases, you'll spend too much money on buying hard cover books. For your first book, I'd suggest reading your state's "one book one read". Your local library will have a program about it and it's a fun discussion time. Also, here's another great link we find useful.

Our biggest problems have been members coming without reading the book. They just want to socialize. We had to ask members to just come if they have read, because we felt strange excluding them from our book discussion and they were trying to get us off topic. The other problem was too many people wanting to join. We now just tell people that when we have someone quit, we will call them. A small group is just easier to manage. Good luck and have fun!

Looking for a good name for our book club, any suggestions?

We are a group of 7 married women, age 26-48, all but one of us have children. We do a monthly book club, we have food and drink wine and discuss our book selection. Would love to come up with a name that sort of incorporates wine and books somehow, in a cute way. Okay, look around you. Who do you know who likes to read as much as you do? If you don't know anyone, ask your librarian if she could help you out. Maybe you could post a notice on a bulletin board at your school.

If you belong to any clubs, like girl scouts or something associated with your church or temple, maybe someone there would be interested.

Good luck and keep trying. Book clubs are a fun way to get to discuss the books you've read, and to recommend them to others.

Anyone know and good book club websites ?

I really like the book Lolita. There are lots of issues raised in this book. Its interesting and I didn't want to put it down.
Love in the Time of Cholera or Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand would both be good. They both give you a lot to think about and discuss. Both are also really easy to get into and have an interesting plot.

What book should my book club read?

You see, the book club I'm in at school was called Twilight Tuesdays. We have all read twilight and we are looking for a new book to read. Every suggestion that we've come up with, somebody in the club has read already. Any suggestions?

BTW- we are all around 14 years old. What book should my book club read?
I'm really into the old books, like Jane Austen novels (Pride %26amp; Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Persuasion, Sense %26amp; Sensibility, Persuasion, Lady Susan) I really enjoyed Jane Eyre too, by Charlotte Bronte. I didn't like Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, though. Too dry. The Scarlet Letter was horrid, don't even think about reading it. I don't really like Steinbeck, I have no idea why, but I don't.

More modern books I love a lot would be OBVIOUSLY the Twilight Saga, I mean, come on. And also, I loved The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I absolutely loved Night, Dawn, Day, The Judges, and The Time of The Uprooted by Elie Wisel. I liked The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I would recommend any of the books listed, plus any one of the Danielle Steel books, or Luanne Rice. Both are so very talented.

    Happy Reading!

(I'm fourteen too, if you don't like my books, don't feel bad, but I would recommend The Book Thief out of my modern books because it has a historical value to it.)

If you belong to a book club, what books would you recommend to generate discussion?

Our library just got a $500 grant to purchase 10 titles for book clubs. We'll get 8 copies of each book. The committee meets next week to select titles. Just to give you some idea, here's what we've read (so we won't be purchasing) and very much enjoyed.

    My Antonia;

    East of Eden;

    The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time;

    Pope Joan;

    Kite Runner;

    Memiors of a Geisha;

    Cain River;

    The Poisonwood Bible;

    The Return of the Native;

    A Prayer for Owen Meany;

    4. Love and Other Impossible Pursuits (it's hilarious)

    5. Arthur and George (historical fiction)

These have all been published in 2006, so hopefully they wouldn't have been read by groups yet. Plus, the nonfiction draws in the male readers. Sounds like fun!!!
    The Color Purple

    Beloved

    As I Lay Dying

    Madame Bovary

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

    Song of Solomon

    Beautiful Lies

    Angels and Demons

  • Book club questions for Phantom by Susan Kay?

I am in a book club and we usually get our books from the library's book club program but this time we're reading Phantom by Susan Kay. At the library the books come with a booklet of questions to discuss about the book. I can't find anything like that for this book. Does anyone know where I could find some or perhaps suggestions of discussion topics?Book club questions for Phantom by Susan Kay?
I actually own the book, which is one of my favorites outside of the original. I would ask your library where they find the booklet.

As far as discussion questions, here's a couple that might help:

    1. In reading the book, do you feel that you understand Erik better now and has this helped you when you read the Leroux version or see the musical?

    2. Do you feel the negative influence towards him at the last part of her pregnancy may have affected how his appearance is?

    3. How do you feel about Erik now? Misunderstood, criminal?

Have you all read many of Oprah's books? She is picking "classics" these days. However, one really good book (that I read before Oprah picked it!) is _Heart is a Lonely Hunter_ by Carson McCullers (I think that's it). Also consider Sue Monk Kidd's new book, _The Mermaid Chair_. I haven't read it but my mom loved it and I know her first book (or last book before this one) _The Secret Life of Bees_ was really popular with book clubs.
If you don't mind some of the older titles... you can try Ho MinFong's titles..

Sing to the dawn (First prize, Council of Interracial Books for Children, 1975)

"In Sing to the Dawn, Ho brought her readers into a realistic rural Thailand through the eyes of a young village girl Dawan, whose struggle to convince those around her to allow her to take up a scholarship to study in the city reflected the sexual discrimination faced by girls in Thailand, especially in the countryside."

    Rice without Rain

"A story centering around Jinda, a seventeen year-old girl from the fictitious Maekung Village which was caught up in the political winds sweeping across the country when a group of university students from Bangkok arrived to encourage the landless farmers to take up a rent resistance movement. Set against the very same historical background as Ho had experienced herself, Jinda's realization that the peasant class was but pawns in the ongoing political tug-of-war and her journey to find her own path in life told the untold stories during those years of turmoil that shrouded Thailand."

    The Clay Marble

"Once again, she presented a strong female protagonist, a twelve year-old girl named Dara who was one of the thousands of refugees escaping to the border at the end of the Khmer Rouge regime when Vietnam invaded the country. She also employed the theme of family unity in the face of adversity, as Dara persuaded her elder brother not to join the army but to return with family, which had already lost the father, to restart life back at home."

Truly inspiring for young females....Need a book title for a book club?

What is a good starter book for an all girl's book club?

Hi, me and my group of 5 friends started a book club. We are now researching a book that we would all like to read. Here are the "requirements" that we'd like the book to be:

    -under 400 pages

-has something to do with a 13-18 year old girl

    -any genre

    -has a deep meaning

I really want the first book we read to be memorable!

    Thanks!!!

^__^What is a good starter book for an all girl's book club?
Why not start with one of the classics for women, "Jane Eyre" would be a good place to start (and you may have to read it later in school anyway so you'll be ahead!)

There's also "Emma" , "Little Women" , or my daughters' very favorite "Anne of Avonlea"
The Gossip Girls series is so great and addicting. I also reccomend Sisterhood of the Traveling pants, its perfect for a group of friends because thats what the books are all about. What is a good starter book for an all girl's book club?
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. and then the 3 after that. ive read them all. i liked them.

also, try books by Hailey Abbott. they may not be 400 pages long, but she writes some amazing books. like the summer boys series. i fell in love with those.
LolitaWhat is a good starter book for an all girl's book club?
*Before I Die by Jenny Downham

*City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

    *The Luxe by Anna Godberson

    *Penelope by Marilyn Kaye

    Also consider

    *Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

    *The Golden Compass

    *Mother of Pearl

    *White Oleander
    Kissing Doorknobs by Terry Spencer

    Speak by Laurie Anderson
Most of the books by Laurie Halse Anderson would work (the exception being Twisted which is about a boy). Speak is pretty deep and deals with rape, so while it's good I probably would recommend Prom or Fever 1793.

    http://www.writerlady.com/

The Bad Girls Club by Rhian Tracey is a novel about an all-girls book club and suggest some good books within it - one of them is Carolyn Mackler's Love and Other Four Letter Words, I think. It's a good book in its own right, too.
    Lovely Bones

i don't know if this is the sort of thing you are looking for or if you are in the UK but here there is a "club" - Red House books -all they send you automatically is a catalogue of what they have available so that you can order as much or as little as you like - there is NO minimum purchase, the books are all childrens books and they have many bargains there

I am starting a book club in my school?

Any suggestion of a really good book. Something that is fun to read but still have a lot to discuss about. Also something that doesnt have a lot of pages since I am not so sure how fast people read and I want them to read at least one book a month. Also do you have a great ideas what we can do in the book club, like I dont know just to spicen the club up and not let it be all reading. I was thinking about bringing some writers since my teacher know some, but anything else?I am starting a book club in my school?
maybe instead of certain books to be read, let the club members pick from the style that appeals to them.

one thing that may be fun is to have a day where you dress up as your favorite character.

another idea is to write a short book as a club. brainstorm and agree on the theme, charterers names etc. try to get your short story published. it would be fun and you will learn alot about the book writing process

    enjoy!
How old are you hon? That helps a lot.

Then I would choose The Road by Cormac Mc Carthy. It really makes you think. And it won this year's Pulitzer Prize. Not very long or hard to read, but something you will never forget. Pax- CI am starting a book club in my school?
I highly suggest reading Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It's a fairly short read and a very heartwarming story (which was tragically turned into a very crappy movie).
I recommend the children's novel written as a story poem in rhyme, 46 pages titled THE SILK ROAD KIDS' 10TH CENTURY ADVENTUE IN KHAZARIA POEMS %26amp; LYRICS BOOK, by Anne Hart. (lulu.com) publisher.

Or the 174-page novel titled: The Perfect Mitzvah Gift Book (novel of 10th century Khazaria) by Anne Hart, ASJA Press, http://www.iuniverse.com. Book Description

There may not have been any concept of Bar or Bat Mitzvah in 10th century Kiev 'yet,' but that wouldn't stop the nearly grown children of the Kagan of the Khazars from arranging the appropriate rite of passage and blessing for the changing of the societies around them which they knew鈥攖he pagan Vikings, Rus, and Pechenegs surrounding Kiev, the Volga Finnic peoples of the Urals, the eternal Silk Road, Christian Byzantium to the south, the Caucasus Mountaineers, the grassland steppes, the rabbi-scholars of Constantinople and Spain, the Turks arriving from Central Asia, and the Islamic Caliphate of Persia and Baghdad to the East. Each encounter began a new concept and framework for their time-travel adventures.

The garden of the Khazars is a storyteller's paradise, especially during the time that their ruler's family, friends, and associates turned Jewish, and the Kagan of the Khazars got tied up in the belly of a Viking Ship, rescued by his thirteen-year-old son, and his daughter, the teenage, time-traveling Princess Tarbagatay rode between the fourth and tenth centuries with the Queen of the Steppes. Welcome to anthropology through fiction and my series for all storytellers on tall tales of Medieval Khazaria.

Let this first person proto-Bar or Bat Mitzvah gift story book novel, although fiction, guide you through the walkways of anthropology and ethnology in my Kagan's Kids of Khazaria Time-Travel Adventures, the perfect book for a Mitzvah gift for thirteen to fifteen-year old readers and also for their parents. The author of many multicultural and multiethnic novels reveals the nuances of anthropology through fiction鈥攕tories, novels, and plays鈥攍et this novel and the treat that follows be your mentor to open doors to new opportunities, choices, roads, and destinations.I am starting a book club in my school?
What you need to make sure is that the books you choose are books normally read by people your age. No matter how fantastic the book is, if it doesn't interest other students, no one will care enough to go to the club, and then theres no point for the club at all.

I did the same thing you're doing, and after failing once, I realized the books really need to be picked by all the members of the club. You can suggest the books but no one is going to buy a book they think is a chore to read. Remember, you are asking people to buy or rent the book.

The key is to make the club something beyond that of which we get in English class. That means it has to be fun. Spiciness is good. Start off with simple books that are easily discussed and very popular in the young adult circle.

On that pivotal first meeting, talk about what you want to accomplish with the club, but allow a lot of time for people to discuss what they're interested in accomplishing and what they would like for a book. Tell people to take the week and consider seriously what books they would like to read in the club and on the second week talk about it some more. Then on the third week, vote.

Spiciness in our club consisted of:

*Regression day (once, we did it for a month) where people bring in their favorite childhood picture book, read it to the class, and then have a discussion (if possible). Lots of laughing and memories.

*Celebrity (meaning popular teacher on campus) Discusser who reads the books and joins in on the conversations.

*Movie day where you watch the movie that goes with the book and you discuss how wrong the movie is.

*Tea Parties (where you get dressed up and...have a tea party!)

*Days where we talked about things we were actually reading in English class to help each other out and get prepared for test or whatever.

Learning from experience, here are some things to expect:

*You're club will be all girls. Don't ask me why, but guys don't do book clubs...ever...

*People will suggest some really stupid books that could never provide enough literary sustenance to support an actual discussion.

*There will always be one person who decks out of the club for a couple of weeks because they can't stand whatever in the next novel.

*Someone will suggest Harry Potter (or now Twilight). While theres stuff to discuss about Harry Potter, Twilight would lead to nothing but sequels and sighs over Edwards and frustrations about the lack of Bella's common sense and/or backbone.

*Most discussions will lead to personal stuff. I guess its bound to happen when you get a group of girls together in one room and ask them to discuss things. It can get really serious (and if you have a book with some sad crap in it or serious issues, I'm serious when I say bring some tissue).

P.S.: As I'm sure you know, food at any club event is like putting a bug zapper out on a humid summer night. Buy a couple a pizzas through school funds (I know its hard because you have to go through all that bureaucracy crap, but its totally worth it!) during that first meeting and you'll have billions of people show up.

    Some books I suggest:

    *Feed by M.T.

    *The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

*The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

    *Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt

*Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

    *Diary by Chuck Palahnuik

*To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

*The Secrete Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

    *Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
    ok

i was thinking about you're problem and i think that you should have about 5-7 books with a summary of each of them and then as a group you vote on which one to read.

Some books i suggest for your book club are:

    1.East by Edith Pattou

2.What My mother Doesn鈥檛 Know by Sonya Sones

3.Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah

4.Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

5.A million little pieces by James Frey

    6.The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

    7.Truesight by David Stahler Jr.

and if i had to pick just one book out of those for you're slub to read i probably would pick #5 or #3 because both are based on true stories and are inspiring and would be good for discussion

If you're leaning torward a short book go for #3

But if you're leaning torward a longer book go for #5

also you can go to amazon.com for summaries on all the books i told you about

A Million Little Pieces Link is:

    http://www.amazon.com/Million-Little-Pie鈥?/a>

    Chinese Cinderalla's link is:

    http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Cinderella鈥?/a>

    ok so hope i helped

    :O)
The House That Jack Built, The Sugar Cookie Murder,

The Cat Who Came To Breakfast, The Chocolate Bear Trap,

The Invitaion To Murder, Robin Hood, Sir Lancelot and

if you cand find it, Murder, m=murder, LIttle Star. This last one involves a girl, around your age (perhaps) who is a movie star.

Is anybody interested in co-writing an online teen book club with me?

I want to create a blog/website for teen readers. If I could get a few teenagers that like to read to write about the books they read, that would be good. You would read a book, and write about if you liked it. It would be for fun. It could be like an online teen book club, and we can have discussions on the website. Is anybody interested is being a co-writer?Is anybody interested in co-writing an online teen book club with me?
