What would be a good book to pick for my book club?

I need to pick a book to recommend to my book club. Ideally it would have the questions to ask section or have questions online somewhere, otherwise, I am responsible for coming up with questions.

One book club member is sick of reading books that have rape in them, so non-rape book suggestions are appreciated. What would be a good book to pick for my book club?
You MUST, I repeat, you must read "Jane Austen Ruined My Life" by Beth Patillo

One of the BEST books I've ever read. Once started, I couldn't put the book down.

I have questions for the book since I am in a book club.
You don't mention the ages or interests of your book club, but one that would fit the non-rape genre is With A Silent Companion, by Florida Ann Town. It's an interesting story - a young Irish girl wants to become a doctor but has to disguise herself as a man in order to go to university. (It's set in the early 19th century). It's based on a true story. If your library doesn't have it, amazon.com has it in paperback for $3.95What would be a good book to pick for my book club?
The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon (Fiction)

How To Be Good - Nick Hornby (Adult Fiction)

The Great Divorce - C. S. Lewis (Spiritual)

The Five People You Meet In Heaven - Mitch Alborn (Inspiring)

Perfect Chemistry 鈥?Simone Elkeles (Romance)

Stealing Heaven 鈥?Elizabeth Scott (Teen)

A Kiss In Time - Alex Finn (Fantasy)

The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette - Carolly Erickson (History)

Redeeming Love - Francine Rivers(Drama)

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson (Mystery)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series- Jeff Kinney (Comedy)

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day 鈥?Winifred Watson (Brit. Lit.)

Great Expectations - Charles Dickens (Classic)

The Long Goodbye: a memoir - Meghan O'Rourke (Memoir)

The Salem Witchcraft Trials: A Legal History 鈥?Peter Charles Hoffer (Self-Help)

The Tale of Despereaux - Kate Dicamillo (Children) DO NOT LET THAT HINDER YOU.
My book club read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak last year, and it was a success! Everyone really liked it, and it does have the "questions to ask" section in the back of the book. It's about a German girl in the Holocaust, but even if the people in your book club aren't big on history I think they would still enjoy it. It's a book I'd recommend to anyone!

Hope this helps :)What would be a good book to pick for my book club?
Fatal Voyage, wait sorry, let me start you at the beginning of the series, Deja Dead

Great book, great series.
The hunger games is the best book i have read by far. And i am absolutely picky with my books. look it up and i swear you wont regret reading it =]
The Maze Runner-like the hunger games, except better. I really liked Beautiful CreAtures by kami garcia. My favorite book ever though is The Book Thief.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver was heart breaking.

The Help by Kathyrn Stockett was great and very important.

Those are good for book clubs.
Don't know if there boys and girls or not so I say my life in pink %26amp; green, hoot, Kira-Kira hope I helped
Rape is SO depressing! I would not come another day if I had to read such rubbish. Try Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. What a relief it would bring to them.
The Tiger's Curse (it is for teens but it is still wonderful)

Shelfri! Its great, I have an account. Basically what you do once you have an account is add books you've read to your "shelf", rate books, or join different groups. In these groups, there are many online discussions, its really fun! :P

Any good ideas on how to run a book club?

I'm starting a book club in my school and I've already got my school librarian and teacher to help me. We need some good ideas on how to run the book club. Please be creative w/ your ideas. Also if you could tell me about your experiences in a book club, that would be very useful. Thanks.Any good ideas on how to run a book club?
Decide if you want your club to have a focus. Is it for guys and girls? Guys only? Girls only? Is it a fantasy book club? Only mysteries? Manga and graphic novels?

If you read a lot of different types of books make sure that you don't have books that appeal to just one group. It is very important to put some thought into what you pick. With the right selection of books, your reading group will likely enjoy months of interesting discussion.

You may also want to pick books that you can get discussion questions for. NoveList has book discussion questions that you can use.

Here are a few books that we've read for our teen book club:

Harry Potter 7

Squashed

Left For Dead

Dealing With Dragons

I also have an anime-manga club that meets monthly. At that club we view anime and discuss it and the manga related to it. We also do different types of activities related to the anime.
i have a book club and i need some ideas too

Any good ideas on how to run a book club?
I have been to many book club discussions and I think the best source for information would be www.bookbrowse.com/bookclubs/. It gives great ideas and suggestions for how to keep things running and even some ideas on how to handle problems that might come up as well as popular books and discussion guides. Just remember to keep the group focused on the book and not personal issues and to let everyone have their say.
I would have a ton of books to choose from and i would have a vote on what book they want to read the one with the most votes wins! I would get ghost fever, Weedflower, Who stole Halloween? and any other books :) Hope this helps you :PAny good ideas on how to run a book club?
hi pratyusha,

think in order to run a book club, you should find out first how many students are interested. then teachers and other classmates can help you achieve at something. you should also gather a list of good books to read, and of different genres as well. you should put up a lot of fliers and advertise your club to everyone who are of the same grade level. make the club sound interesting, with book discussions, and contests like battle of the books. sharing your opinions can also help with public speaking. also create projects to do as well. read different types of stories. you should try to make reading sound fun and enjoyable. people like to read different kids of books, and your book club should let them. you might even be able to read to the younger children in your school, and do a book buddies program that is included in your book club. i think many kinds of activities and more will make a person interested. a key is to allways keep organized. each time keep a different kind of genre, or style. you can go by an author or something. then have a book talk and discussion. you can have a battle of the books contest, and the winning team might earn a prize. you should also ask your classmates on ideas too. you can use a book club, to spread messages about things you have learned. you can conduct book swaps. where during a weeks time people bring in any books from their houses in. and you lay them out on tables. and then one day everyone come and pick out however many books they donated. there are many things you can do. you just got to be different and have a variety of programs to do. doing the same thing all the time can be boring.just get creative, and make everything organized.

Teen Book Clubs?

Im looking for an online teen book club.

Free

And maybe (not has to be) but maybe reading books off of reading lists.

If anyone knows of a good online teen book club please answerTeen Book Clubs?
Good evening and welcome. I recently spent some time as part of my day job looking into this very subject. I can tell you that the best teen sites I found were:

Spinebreakers (for ages 13-18)

www.spinebreakers.co.uk

and

Stories from the Web (for ages 0-14)

www.storiesfromtheweb.org

On these sites you can join reading clubs, share news and write your own reviews.

Swapping Lives by Jane Green is about two women, one British and one American, who trade lives for a while. Its nothing deep, just a light chick-lit read, but its fun, especially for summer! The Bloody Jack Series, by L.A. Meyer. Bloody Jack is really a girl. Orphaned in London at the end of the 1700's, she lives with a street gang, then disguises herself as a boy and is hired onto a British Naval ship.

Great adventure, great characters, humor, suspense, great FUN.

What are some good books for starting book clubs?

There are 6 members of the group. 2 are in their late 20's, one is 16, another is 33, and me and my frined are both 17. So as you can see there is a very different age range between us all. We are willing to buy all the same book, no matter if it's paperback or hard cover. We plan to meet every other week. We are just interested in reading the book together, but we do hope to get into some in-depth discussion about it also. Were looking for a good book for starting book groups(clubs). Genres we like are science fiction, action/adventure, westerns, and war/military.What are some good books for starting book clubs?
I think Pride and Predijuce is a GREAT place to start!
I second the recommendation for Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card), and also suggest that Ender's Shadow be read right afterwards. It's a parallel story to Ender's game but from the view point of a different character. The spin on the story really makes you analyze things. The comparison provokes a lot of thought. I think the discussion you could get out of this story, (even without adding Ender's Shadow in there too), would be pretty insanely good.

They are fantastic science fiction reads. My mother and I both really enjoyed reading these books and discussing them afterwards =)What are some good books for starting book clubs?
I'm also a Louis L'Amour fan. My two favorites are "Last Of The Breed" and "Passin' Through". A great war novel is "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara. His son, Jeff, wrote a number of good war novels too. Our book discussion group had its biggest turnout for "The DaVinci Code".
    "The Long Walk," Slavomir Rawicz.

    "Inside the Aquarium," Viktor Suvorov.

    "Red Cocaine," Dr. Joseph Douglass.

"Stranger in a Strange Land," Robert Heinlein.

    "Slaughterhouse-Five," Kurt Vonnegut.

"Stay Alive, My Son," Pin Yathay. What are some good books for starting book clubs?
Enders Game is one of the best books of Ive ever Read comes with a few books that cover the same story but in the view of diffrent characters its worth reading.
His Dark Materials would be great!!!
    Hey Book Club Starters!

Did you find good books yet? I can suggest some classics (because in classics you really don't have an age limit). In science fiction I would start out with Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game". It is great to read and has tons to talk about: ethics, children, exploitation, control, etc. Some of the best adventure novels were written by Louis L'Amour, start with "The Lonesome Gods" or "The Walking Drum", again lots to discuss about at the end. The very first western ever written is "The Virginian" by Owen Wister...awe-inspiring and beautifully written, even people who hate westerns like this one. I don't know any military books.

    Book Clubs / Groups?

If you are a part of a book club, or online book group, what do you look for when you searching? In your opinion makes an ideal book club?Book Clubs / Groups?
The English Honor Society at my school is debating starting a book club. One of the main issues we have is everyone having time to meet, because we never seem to all be able to get together at the same time. Therefore we are considering having it completely online using blogs as a discussion tool. That way you don't have to have the book read by a certain date - it almost let's someone join at any stage, since you can just go in and read the blogs at any time. I would think flexibility would potentially be an important concern.Book Clubs / Groups?

Don't these book clubs check your name for accuracy?

I asked my friend how she affords so many books, she tells me she joins a few of the various book clubs each time she moves, and she doesn't even use her real name. She gets the starting shipment of however many free books, they never ask for payment up front, and then she just never pays it and then moves and does it again. Is this really true? How do these places not go bankrupt with people stealing books this way?Don't these book clubs check your name for accuracy?
    How often does she move?

They only send books for so long until they send a bill and stop sending books without payment.

I think most people wouldn't do that, some people have morals, or at least have never thought of doing that.

There is a little evil voice in my head that says "hey, maybe that's a good idea.." but i don't have the nerve to do that.

It probably doesn't happen that much though.

i really want to be in a book club, but there aren't any around where i live so my next alternative is to either start one or go online. Since i really do't want to start one then I'm going online. so if you know any good teen free online book clubs where teens can discuss books and such then please tell me, i don't really want to be a part of anything where you order books but if you don't have anything else then I'll try that. Childrens Book Clubs?

    Hi,

    Hope someone can help me...

I had a booklet through from Books For Children where you get 5 books for 50p each and then have to buy 4 more books during the first 12 months, also get a free rucksack. But when I was reading the small print I saw that you get sent the Editors Choice book or collection through every month unless you opt out of it every month.

Are any of the book clubs any good? What one/s would you recommend as ds is really into reading but hasn't got a very big collection!

Any advice would be greatly received. ThanksChildrens Book Clubs?
I don't think that much of the book clubs. Are you a library member? A lot of libraries run schemes where you get free books, and most of them have booksales where books are sold very cheaply. And in the meantime you can borrow and read different books each week.
Stay away from Books for Children, they are rubbish. I joined and spent ages choosing 5 books only to be sent different ones! The joinging deals are good (if you get the right books!) but the prices soon go up. Depending on the age of child I'd recommend Charity shops - I get most of my Daughters books from there %26amp; the library %26amp; if we find a 'keeper' then i might splash out %26amp; buy it from Amazon or Waterstones, they sometimes have good deals.Childrens Book Clubs?
I was tempted to join one of these as well, but after reading the fine print, I too decided against it. I now buy my son's books from goodwill and borrow other books from the library. A trip to the library is always fun for the little ones, so maybe you can do the same.
books for children are bad i joined them i did not get the ruck sack that they said i would get then they never sent me the bill but a few months later i got a letter from a debt collection agency my original bill was 拢16.00 but the collection agency charging me 拢60.00 i would stay well awayChildrens Book Clubs?
I don't think much of book clubs of any sort. I don't like the thought of committing myself to buying something every month for a year or whatever the deal is. Plus, if they send you the editor's choice and you don't want it, then you have to send it back - I have had problems in the past with returning items like these - couriers not turning up when expected, if at all, an extra trip to the post office etc.

I would rather make use of the local library, or buy books at the supermarket/bookshop. I also keep my eye out at charity shops, too. I have often picked up great books for kids there, all have been in reasonable condition and are fairly cheap.
they r a con as you have to pay postage to send the ones u dont want back....kids dont really need that many books

What is the point of book clubs?

As others have said, a book club, not the mail order ones, is for people to come together and discuss different books. What you like about them, disliked, or what you didn't understand. There are times when you might read a book and after finishing it, you want to discuss it with someone, and this might be the perfect opportunity to do it. Mail order book clubs are basically another means of getting books outside of having to go to stores and such. What is the point of book clubs?
Never been a part of one, but my guess would be to motivate others within the group to read, and to understand the book from another reader's perspective.
so people who enjoy books can get together and discuss their favorite parts of the book and stuff. It also is an opritunity for a group of friends to enjoy a book together and such. What is the point of book clubs?
if you mean the mail-order type, it's to sell a product. face meetings are about people sharing a common interest. we are social animals. always have been.
To read (and then discuss) books. What is the point of book clubs?
The mail order book clubs are a real boon to people who are shut in or those who live in areas where there are no bookstores.

I know it's hard to conceive of any place in the US where there are no bookstores, but you haven't been to Wyoming.
To make unimportant people sound important.

How do I opt out of book clubs and stop receiving books/bills from them?

It's only been a week since i started receiving books from the following book clubs...:

    %26gt;Literary Guild Select Club

    %26gt;Quality Paperback book club

    %26gt;Book-of-the-month Club

And I don't know how to stop them... I don't even remember applying/ordering these books I received. And I have to pay for these books...

I've searched on the internet and I've found many complaints about these book clubs... and not yet found a solution to my problem...

I have opened only one of my packages to see the contents...and I've noticed there's no phone number/email address/etc. So there's no way to communicate with them. I've been advised to send them back un-opened. But I know that probably won't stop them from sending books to me and I'll just have to keep paying shipping charges...

    Someone help please. %26gt;_%26lt;

I may have been doing some marketing (surveys) which probably got me into this mess...How do I opt out of book clubs and stop receiving books/bills from them?
Postal Regulations state that you do not have to pay for items sent to you through the mail which you have not ordered.

However, if you have joined a book club -- that is, answered an ad, commercial, direct mail -- and agreed to become a member and take a minimum number of offered books in exchange for a premium ("Take any 3 books for $1.00!),

then you entered into a contract and you are obligated to fulfill your part of the contract. You may cancel it by returning any premiums you received for joining the book club.

You are receiving books that you haven't ordered because book clubs operate on a marketing device called "negative option and reader's inertia."

Book club members are sent advance notice of book club selections -- books which have been chosen by the club as the current offering of the club. These advance notices are masked as book reviews but are actually promotions. As a book club member, you are given the OPTION of refusing the book -- usually by returning a form enclosed with the advance notice ... or not doing anything and having the book sent to you automatically. This is negative option. Book clubs survive because readers are lazy --this is reader's inertia -- and they fail to return the rejection form.

Now...when you joined the book club, the agreement was that you would buy a minimum number of books offered by the club. Readers who remember the terms of their agreement will often allow several books to be sent to them automatically in order to fulfill their obligation. Then...they forget that they don't have to buy any more books and indeed could resign from the club without any penalty. The book club continues to send these advance notices and then the books and the reader, who has now gotten into the habit of regularly receiving these books, automatically pays the invoices that accompany the books. This sometimes has gone on for many years. (Book of the Month Club is 81 years old.)

Send the Club a letter resigning from the Club and see what happens.

You may get a stern note saying that there's a "quid pro quo," you took the premiums agreeing to buy a minimum number of books and you still owe a certain number of purchases. Or you may get a letter saying, return the premiums and that will be an end to it.

You need to sign up with the mail preference service, this is a free service that effectively sifts out the 'junk' mail such as the book clubs, from dropping their rubbish through your letterbox
You signed the book of death? Why am i being hounded by book clubs i did not join and how do i get rid of them?
not much you can do it happens to me i just keep what ever thay send then when thay bill me i dont pay thay soon get the message
Tell them to go forth and multiply!

If you did NOT join and received books tell them to collect or else you will bin them in 14 days.

If you have NOT received books let them get on with proving you have "joined" and let them PROVE in court that YOU are Guilty

That is what I did and I won!Why am i being hounded by book clubs i did not join and how do i get rid of them?
    1) Send all junk mail back "not known at this address" - but make sure it doesn't come from someone you want to hear from!

    2) Register with the mailing preference service
you don't have to return the book if you didn't ask for it...........write to them and tell them to remove it or you will charge storage for it. remind them that it is illegal to harrass anybody for debt let alone for an imagined debt......this sounds like a scam to me , most people probably pay up just for peace, but what they are doing to you is illegal.

  • Are there any online book clubs where people can chat about books, post questions, and discuss?

Shelfari has that option. It's a site where you can list all your books for free; you can also post reviews of books that you've read and ask questions about them as well. Besides listing all your books you can also join discussion groups based on genres of books and individual books themselves. If you don't see a discussion group on a book you like then you can create your own. It's a fun site to join and browse on (you can invite people you know to be your "friends" there and also see who has read the same books that you have). Here's a link to the site: http://shelfari.com/

Happy reading to you! :-)Are there any online book clubs where people can chat about books, post questions, and discuss?
There are quite a number of online reading groups. The first link below has a directory of some of them. There are also a number of mailing lists devoted to particular authors - Pynchon, Wallace, Nabokov, Joyce, etc. - many of which use the author's last name followed by -l.Are there any online book clubs where people can chat about books, post questions, and discuss?

Do teachers/schools gain anything from students ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs?

The prices in the catalogs teachers send home are not always particularly competitive, and I'd feel better if I knew that somehow the teachers gained classroom materials or the school got something out of the deal. Any teachers out there that can shed some light?Do teachers/schools gain anything from students ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs?
Depending on how much is ordered by students, teachers can earn free books and educational materials for their classrooms. I taught preschool for 3 years and earned numerous books and books-on-tape but the catalog that teachers had to choose from included other classroom items.
The teachers get free classroom books and materials.I asked my son's teacher last year.Do teachers/schools gain anything from students ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs?
Yes...they get like 50% of the profit plus they get books for their library..
They get free books depending on the size of order per classroom. Free materials is always great for schools!!Do teachers/schools gain anything from students ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs?
Certain books actually donate to the education department I think. There are some teachers that receive books and gifts from the company as well.

  • Are book clubs fun??????????

I want to start a book club this summer with my friends. I was thinking about inviting 5 friends? Is that a good amount?

How many times should we meet a month?

Would a library be a good place to meet?

    Are book clubs even fun?

THANKS! P.s. give me any other info abut book clubs u know. thanks! Are book clubs fun??????????
    Here was a simple guide : http://bestsellers.about.com/od/bookclub鈥?/a>

I think it should be once a month, people get busy.

A very important thing about a book club is the discussion. Make sure you have prepared lots of higher order comprehension questions about the book so that it's not like "This girl was nice" and is more like "Sally was a very placid and friendly character, because she was over compensating for her past" etc. So that there's something for people to discuss and share their different ideas about.

You can't have food in a library! I think book clubs should have food :)

Fun is what you make it.
It all depends on who's in the club with you, and what you're choosing to read. The frequency of your meetings should be based on what you choose to read, to make sure everyone has time to read what you're choosing. 5 or 6 is a good number - that way you can have good discussions with multiple opinions. The library is a good place, but you should go there and ask if they have a room where you could meet and not bother anyone else. Are book clubs fun??????????
The amount is good, as long as they enjoy to read ;)

2-4, depends on how hard it is to get to places where you will be meeting. Do it as frequently or non-frequently as you guys can. The best book clubs that keep you involved meet at least 2 times a month, but no more than 4. You don't want to disrupt their own schedules with your book club's, it's just rude.

Library, bookstore, coffee shop, any quiet place where you can chat freely. If they are comfortable doing this, you can rotate going to each others homes! Only if they are comfortable with this though.

I think they are quite amusing for the kind of people who enjoy them. Make sure that everything is easy for the members to do, and that you pick good and engaging books. I believe book clubs are very educational and they are good for friendships. Especially small book clubs like the one that you suggested.

Hope you have a great summer!

    RYANN SHAE
It depends on what kind of person you are.

I usually turn the book discussions into an argument so I just had to leave the club.

I'm a fast reader and a deep thinker so most people see me as being a cocky know-it-all.

I'm really opinionated so a simple chat about what Edgar Allan Poe's raven represented was turned into a mild fit.

    =P

If you think you can go for it then go ahead. I prefer to read alone.

All of that meeting in a certain place and times should be up to you and the members, and what is easiest for them. Are book clubs fun??????????
im in one and i asked for a book over a month ago and its still not here!!!
i wouldn't meet at a library. i would make sure everyone has the book before the event and meet at someones house. if you guys are friends it will be fun. you can just talk about the book. Make sure to read at the same rate!!

can you help me with my story? like i needed to write one for english and i got really into it and i just wanted some people to read it and tell me what they think! anyone can read it! PLEASE EMAIL ME!!!

It depends on her age, but If I were her, I'd contact Wonderland Books, between Lenoir and Hickory and see if they couldn't provide her some more information. They're my favorite Used book store in the area. If she's younger, Karl Marx at the Dragon's Den in Boone can provide a comic book and graphic novel group.

    Sorry.

I used to read them as a kid though some 20 + years ago.Teachers: do you use Scholastic Book Clubs?
I just sent an online order today. It's my eighth year teaching and it's always been convenient, just call 1-800-SCHOLASTIC.

I tell my families that libaries are great, but their second best source of books is scholastic. Also, their professional resources are very good.

My son is a fan of the book order and my preschool daughter now brings it home. I'm very happy to help turn them on to reading.

When the scholastic box arrives at school I make a point of walking it down to the classroom since everybody gets happy to see it!

I love to read and so do alot of my friends.I was thinking of starting my very own book club! But if it's time consuming and boreing after a while then please share. What do you do and say??Thanks everyone who reads this:)Are book clubs fun or lame?
It's very time consuming to read through so many books just to pick one to promote for each meeting. But to get together on a monthly basis or so discuss the book, what you liked and didn't like, the paasages that moved you, the characters you sympathized with, etc., you see that book clubs are a very rewarding experience. I think it's a good idea.
I think you answered your own question, it won't possibly be boring if it's your group of friends and you. Just assign a book to read, have food and drinks, and try not to spend too much time discussing the book to the point of boredom. Good luck! Are book clubs fun or lame?

Anyone here prefer NOT to be in a book club?

I love to read so much, but I feel that book clubs, as well as reading for class, kinda take away the fun from my book. I like to read for myself. So what about you book lovers?

VIVA LA RAZA!Anyone here prefer NOT to be in a book club?
Being forced to do anything takes most of the fun out of it. I also hate having deadlines. It could be a book that I really enjoy, but if you tell me that I HAVE to read it by a certain date, chances are that I won't.

VIVA LA RAZA pero soy una gringa.. jeje.
i hate books and book clubs tooAnyone here prefer NOT to be in a book club?
I enjoy Book clubs both online and off because these offer a diverse understanding of a particular authors work. There can be such great discussion amongst other readers who might see a plot, theme or character development a little differently than I do. It helps expand my horizons as a better writer and a more recognized reader . . .

Sorry that was not much help since you asked if there was anyone out here who did NOT prefer to be in one. As a twice-published author, all exposure is a welcomed larger reader base so yes I do enjoy them !

    sharing the light,

    miss erica hidvegi

    the enlightenment advisor
Of course. First of all if your book is picked for you, what if you hate it? I LOVE to read, but I find reading for class and clubs annoying. It completely ruins it for me because,

    1. Most people read MUCH slower than me.

    2. I usually hate the book

    3. I have to answer stupid questions like, 'What did you think about...?' I hate those questions SO MUCH. They make me want to puch holes in the walls.

Yes, I agree. It really ruins it.Anyone here prefer NOT to be in a book club?
I'm with you 100%. When you have to read a book, it takes a lot of the fun out of it and book clubs also have a low selections of books. It takes away from the readers ability to pick their own reading material.
I completely agree. I like to read a lot, but I tend to read a little too much sometimes. So if i have to read with my class, I can't read as much as I want. Plus, Some people don't actually read the book.
There are plenty of books that I read because I had to for school. I feel that I would have enjoyed them more if I didn't have to read them. What is the point of a book club?

Then I find them at the local library...and read them for free (YAY..I am a broke student). I have just finished my final exams on Monday and I am now JONSING to read something good! If there is a resource that someone could recommend, please post!!!Are there any other book clubs other than Oprah's?

Are there any online book clubs?

I was wondering if there are any groups online where people can recommend and share books that they had read. Thanks! :)Are there any online book clubs?
Shelfari.com is great! You have a virtual shelf on which to place your books. You can rate and review your books. You can connect with others, view their shelves and reviews and join groups to discuss books with others. Good luck and happy reading! :)Are there any online book clubs?
    im wondering the same thing...

Are these Online book clubs like India Today Book Club are really worth or not?

It depends on how much the convenience is worth to you. If you have ready access to a free library they are not worth it. If you have no other way to find the books, it depends on what you think it is worth to get the books you wantAre these Online book clubs like India Today Book Club are really worth or not?

Good movies with book clubs in them...recommendations please?

    Hi,

I am looking for a good movie to watch with a book club in it. I have watched Jane Austen's Book Club, and really liked it so I was hoping to be able to find some other movies involving a book club.

Nothing rated higher than a 12a please.

If you know any movies with strong literature themes feel free to suggest those as well, or tv shows with book clubs.

Thanks in advance :)Good movies with book clubs in them...recommendations please?
I don't know of any other films that have such a central book club theme. There are some TV shows that feature a book club-related episode... For example, the American version of The Office has a book club in "Branch Wars" (series 4, episode 6). But nothing noteworthy.

There was a fairly short-lived Scottish television series called "The Book Group" (2002-2003), which was about a book group and its members' lives. Offbeat comedy. If you can access http://www.hulu.com, it is available on there. However, the show is rated for mature audiences, so it probably doesn't fit your criteria... - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276650/

For literature-themed movies, I might be able to give some more help! I recommend:

Dead Poets Society (1989): Boys in a private American boarding school learn life lessons from their English teacher. This is a very good film with a strong cast, great script, and beautiful cinematography. Rated PG (UK %26amp; US) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097165/

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged (2000): All of Shakespeare's works in an hour and a half...with just three male actors?? Oh yes! Absolutely hilarious and any English major's dream play. It's been released on region 1 DVD (the live stage play is roll on the floor funny as well). Not rated, but decently family-friendly (probably would be under 12A, even) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301126/

    Stranger Than Fiction (2006): A man realizes he's the main character in a book that's being written. It's a comedic drama, I suppose. It's quite clever. Rated 12A (UK)/PG-13 (US) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420223/

Inkheart (2008): A man has the ability to bring book characters to life by reading aloud. This is an engaging fantasy movie, based on a book. Rated PG (UK %26amp; US) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494238/

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003): Characters from different books (from Tom Sawyer to the Invisible Man to Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde) band together to defeat a literary villain. Rated 12 (UK)/PG-13 (US) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311429/

The History Boys (2006): A play-turned movie about English schoolboys studying for their A-levels to get into Oxford and Cambridge. Clever, quick-witted script, but certainly has some adult themes. This one misses your 12A requirement, but I felt it worthy of being on the list (wait a few years and check it out, if you prefer!). Rated 15 (UK)/R (US) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464049/

Hope this helps. The links are so you can further check out the films that appeal to you!

What are comedy clubs looking for when they book a comedian?

I'll graduate in 11/07 with a MBA in Entertainment Management and I'm trying to get an internship as a Booking Agent or a Acting Agent before then so I'll have some experience. I have five more weeks before my first core class in Entertainment Management! What are comedy clubs looking for when they book a comedian?
Funny, Original.. someone who doesn't "remind me of...." (someone else's clone).. can they think on their feet? Do they only follow a script, or can they change things up of there is a heckler, or something else that draws their attention.

I love comedians who somehow have their jokes flow.. whether it is a set that ends up back at the beginning, or a set that has the same kind of feel or feeling about it. Sometimes going "all over the place" with different categories is good, but you have to be very good to pull that off. (Steven Wright)

Thats all I can think of right now. What are comedy clubs looking for when they book a comedian?
Someone that is funny. What are comedy clubs looking for when they book a comedian?
Try to be energietic and enthusiastic, first impressions can mean a lot with most of these guys.
Someone who can keep a room full of drunk people laughing and not make them turn on him/her for one thing. Someone doing original material, someone who thinks quick on their feet (What if there's a heckler? Will they pull a Michael Richards?!) They have do be able to stay calm and diffuse people too %26amp; make it funny.

As for the talent agency interships, many offices do offer internships and it's worth looking into. You can certainly learn a lot about the business, but they expect a lot from someone they're not even paying... be prepared to get used and abused!

i wouldn't describe this as a typical book club but it certainly is fun. The site is called bookcrossing.com and basically you register with the site and read a book and then leave it somewhere. Inside the book is instructions for the person who found it to go to the web site and see where the book has been and they can add a comment to the notes the person who left the book has made. The person who finds the book is meant to read it and then leave it somewhere again. Some books have made their way around the world this way and it is fun to watch your book and its travels.

    Book clubs -- delivery times?

I'm awaiting orders from two book clubs (joined one today online, one by mail two days ago). Do you know how long (roughly) they take to send out the books? I'm in the UK, the book clubs were the fantasy and science fiction book club and the arts guild bookclub. Thanks guys! :o)

    xXxBook clubs -- delivery times?
Hi. I am in the Literary and Mystery Book Clubs here in the States. They usually take about 2 weeks to get a order to me. If your book clubs are located in the States I would probably guess 3 weeks. Just forget you ordered them and then one day when you go to your mail box it will be like Christmas. Kind of cool to get 6 books at a time. Anyways I hope that helped. Take care.

Can people at the same address join book clubs?

Probably so. But if you're concerned about getting busted by the crack security staff @ BoMC, just use a fake name. They'll ship to anything so long as you pay your invoices. I joined a book club one time using a reasonably profane combination of words that supposedly represented my "name". It was funny to see a brown cardboard box arrive every few months addressed to that person (or, action, to be more accurate).

    Audio Book Clubs?

I have looked and looked. A few years ago I joined an Audio Book Club that was just like joining a normal book club. You had to buy a certain amount of books in a certain amount of time.

I can not find it or any other audio book club. I can find Audio Book Clubs but they want me to download the books and this is not what I want.

Can someone help me out to find an audio book club out there.

Thank you so very much for any help anyone can give me.Audio Book Clubs?
    http://www.audiobookclub.com

At this link, I see another link, a bit down and on the right (under "News"), in orange, that says, under a line or two, 'Welcome Audio Book Club Members'... which is a link.

I tried it, but it looks like I have to join.

Let me see what that entails-- a name, an email address, a password for that site.

Then all I see are audio books for sale, with some discounts, but what I looked at looked expensive to me.

I saw nothing about time limits.

As you see, I don't yet know much about how this 'club' works.

There is also a list of links under "Info and Services" which I didn't explore, as there are many.

If this site interests you at all, please feel free to follow the link above and explore all the Info, Services... sign up if you like (since they do not ask for any accounts) and see what you see.

How do I go about joining a book club?

What are some book clubs you know of or are part of? Are they free? What sort of books do you read, and how often do you meet? How do I go about joining a book club?
I'd recommend that you visit the closest library first, and ask the reference librarian if he/she knows of any local book clubs. The librarian should also be able to tell you who the group leader is of that book club. Then write the book club leader an email to find out if you would "fit" into the group -- i.e., is a group of women (or men, or mixed) of approximately your same age. Ask the leader what books they've read over the past six months or so, and consider whether you have read -- and enjoyed -- any of the books that club has recently read. If that route doesn't pan out, then go to your local bookstore and try the same thing. This time, of course, you'll ask a salesclerk to recommend a club. And if you can't find a group to join in either case, then you'll have to gather up about seven or eight of your friends and START YOUR OWN!!How do I go about joining a book club?
i am part of a book club. i sent a letter to a couple of my neighbors requesting the idea. we called eachother and planned a first meeting. we meet once a month and rotate houses. its a blastHow do I go about joining a book club?
I belonged to a neighborhood book club before we moved away. I was a latecomer, so I went along with the rules they had already established. They only read non-fiction, primarily histories and biographies.

I'm not much of a non-fiction history reader, but it was very interesting to reach outside my comfort zone.

We each got our own copies in whatever way we could. Check out from the library (which only works for fast readers), buy used or buy new.

The club itself was free. We rotated hosting duties and met at each other's homes once a month.

Because we lived in a history-rich area of the country, there were also a couple of "field trips" every year to different Civil or Revolutionary War battlegrounds and such.
well you get together with your friends and start reading a book then discuss:D or just join one on the internet. search google.

Why don't men like book clubs?

Our book club has one man (part of a couple) in it. Do men not like to read or just don't want to be part of a club. It would just be more interesting with men to add to the discussions. Its not the type of books we read because we read books by any author that is suggested male or female. Our book club is the branch library club. Why don't men like book clubs?
I would have to agree with Dale - in our society we do associate literature with women. I did my bachelors in English. Every time I would take a class about novels it would be stocked full of women with one or two men in the class. I personally do not go to book clubs, but my wife does. I would not go to them since she has told me 80% of the talk is not about the book and the actual analysis of the book is more "how does this relate to my life experience" rather than using actual literary theory.
No offence but book clubs are not really designed for men. Sitting down with cups of teas and biscuits having a talk about books and what revelations you've discovered- sounds like an excuse for a mother's meeting to me.Why don't men like book clubs?
I think that would be an over generalized statement. I know some men who are in book clubs and I know many who are avid readers. Having said that, our culture tends to equate reading with girls or women, more than boys or men.
    Its Book~

i dont know what other dudes will say..

    but...to me.....its...Boringgggggggg....

    i wanna c some action...some kickin ***...

    not....once upon a time....^_______^Why don't men like book clubs?
Well its not so much that they don't like to read as much as they don't have the imaginative ability to take that book and turn it into something they could do or use and also some men just simply don't have reading abilities i know people that can't even read a child's book out loud because they really didn't read when they were younger or just didn't take interest in reading
All the men I've ever been with LOVE to read (or I wouldn't have been with them, to be sure). My husband reads very fast and can rip through a thick book in two days of riding the bus to and from the office. He devours books. We have to go to the local used book store several times a week to keep him stocked up with new things to read and to sell off his old books so we don't run out of room. But he'd probably never join a book club. I think it's because he's turned off by the idea of analyzing the things he reads in the company of other people. Book clubs are very "talky" and that kind of thing usually appeals to women more than to men.
there are much better stories and articles in playboy - lol
I don't see any connection between reading and women. Maybe it is just the circles I hang out in but my male friends read more than my female friends, as do I myself (I'm a guy).

What we don't do is sit around and chat about the books we read, at least not in the form of a book club. Personally I want to read my books at my own pace, in my own order, and I do not need the input of others to understand most books.

So I say it is the "book club" thing, not the "book" thing.

Never having been there myself, there is a buzz about Wigtonshire being a Used Book mecca. While doing genealogy research on the internet, this fact was found. Here are some sites below that will get you in touch with people that can more readily answer your question. Are there any book clubs in Wigtown, Whithorn, Garlieston in Wigtownshire?

    What happens at book clubs?

I know that the group discusses the book, but what kinds of things do they discuss? Symbolism? Morals? What happens at book clubs?
Book clubs are fun...in my experience, the people involved mainly discuss their opinions about the book: Why they liked it or didn't like it, who their favorite character was and why...things like that.

They were pretty informal. But the host/hostess of the week kept most of the chat on the book, while also providing snacks and drinks (yum)...and a fire in the fireplace in winter-time! Great stuff.

The members also voted on which book to read next, even if the one who started the club named the first book, so keep that in mind, too.
What happens at a book club is usually a bunch of friends will have to read a book then discuss what they had just read. They share opinions and if they would encourage a friend to read it. Also they usually talk about what is going on in their lives and have a little snack too! They usually discuss if they liked the book, the lessons, any connections to our life time, etc. What happens at book clubs?
The discussion depends on the bookclub. They are usually free to discuss anything regarding the book being read.

Book club s are awesome i also belong to one; we discussed all of the events we talk about things that we like or dislike we vote for which book we are going to read first ;them if someone got behind or went out of town we will give them a up to dated on the things we did or said; we also go to our local library and checks books out and sometimes we will order books for our kids and we will have books sale during national book day; or book week. we also talk about things that is happening in our community; about our children's ; we also volunteer in some school buy reading stories books jokes rhymes to younger kids. and we go to nursing homes to spend some time reading to the elder ly .all of this is allright with me i love doing this. What happens at book clubs?
I'm pretty sure it's an excuse to get away from their spouses and drink wine.

I was hoping for something educational or thought provoking but, then again, I was the only male in the room. I felt like a male stripper. There was a lot a innuendos and whispering. I felt very uncomfortable. Now I know how women feel in an all male office.
a bunch ov people get together, and read books, and talk about them, thatz about it!

Does anyone know any good online book clubs?

Preferably based around authors Jodi Picoult and Nicholas Sparks :)

Thanks for all answers :)Does anyone know any good online book clubs?
I don't know any book clubs, but on a side note there is a good website that allows you to track how many books you have writing while discussing how the book was (Good or Bad). and if you have either a nook color or an amazon kindle like me, then you will really enjoy the whole thing.

The website is http://www.goodreads.com and the links in the sources are about the devices I mentioned.

  • What area should I book my hotel in Dallas Texas near bars/lounges/clubs?

I am going to spend the weekend in Dallas with some friends to go out and have fun I know nothing about Dallas I have only been twice.

I would like to book my hotel near bars, lounges, clubs and restaurants to save on cab fair what is a good area to look? Downtown? Galleria? Uptown? HELLLPPPPWhat area should I book my hotel in Dallas Texas near bars/lounges/clubs?
Uptown probably has the most bars and clubs for young people.

There is action on lower Greenville, Deep Elm, and some downtown too.

I don't club and am too old to give you any real advice as to where the action is for someone your age. What area should I book my hotel in Dallas Texas near bars/lounges/clubs?
Addison is probably one of the most popular spots but isn't in Dallas proper. If you want to be near the downtown action then maybe Deep Ellum, but I've not been down there for so long that I have no idea what it's like now. Personally, I find downtown Dallas to be rather dead and unexciting most of the time. You may want to consider Fort Worth instead, it has a thriving square which is always busy. What area should I book my hotel in Dallas Texas near bars/lounges/clubs?
Downtown would be great. A lot of people specially the party people.
Addison is the place to be these days. All sorts of new bars, clubs and restraunts are sprouting up all over the place!

Are the book clubs worth it? Used stores?

I keep seeing the tear-off post cards in my books for their book clubs(yes Im reading the cheesy $3-10 romance novels). I read so much that it would cost a fortune to buy books at the rate I read them, think one to three small books a night or one of the paperbacks with two or three stories each.

Im trying to figure out a cheaper way to get new books but are the book club deals from the publishers worth it? What about used book stores? Are the book clubs worth it? Used stores?
I use a website called paperbackswap.com. They let you trade your old books for books that you haven't read yet. You post books you would like to get rid of and every time you mail one to someone you get a point that you can use to get any other book on the site. You can make a wishlist so if a book you want isn't posted you will get it when someone posts it. You only pay to mail books to other people and that usually costs under $3 and you can print the postage from the website so you don't need to go to the post office. Are the book clubs worth it? Used stores?
I also use paperbackswap.com and it's great. I wouldn't sign up for those tear off offers, they can be misleading.
