I have heard that when a book has the words BOOK CLUB EDITION on it, no matter how old the book is, that book has no value. Only the books that do not have those words are the ones that would have value. (of course that depends on first edition, first printing, author, title etc. ) Is this true???
I have a very old Stuart Little book. The DJ states it is a Book Club Edition. I don't know if it is valuable or not.
Thank you!BOOK CLUB EDITION does that mean that book has no value?
You can check with Bauman Rare Books. They have a website. I don't know about children's books, but very often book club editions are abridged - making them less valuable. Pax-CBOOK CLUB EDITION does that mean that book has no value?
You are correct. Book Club books have been mass produced using paper and bindings of low quality. Books are not typically published for book clubs unless the author and/or the title have already proven to be very popular. As with most things, there are a few exceptions, but it would be quite rare to find a Book Club edition that was worth anything more than 50 cents.
Quoted from "Book Collecting 2000: A Comprehensive Guide" by Allen and Patricia Ahearn, pg. 76:
"These reprints are not particularly valuable unless a new introduction is included in the edition, although some of the very early scarce titles by very popular authors are sought by collectors if they are in fine condition in dustwrappers, principally because the dustwrappers on these reprints duplicated the front cover and spine of the original trade first editions."
The book goes on to state that there were more than 800 book clubs in the USA in the 20th century.
