Expanding on Voice's answer - what the 12 year old is recommending is Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonsong" trilogy: Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums. It's written for young adults and it's pretty good. (Anne McCaffrey wrote a long series about the Dragonriders of Pern; all the rest are adult books and other than the first one - Dragonflight - none of them are really all that good, but for some reason the Dragonsong books for YA are better - probably because she actually writes a good story when she doesn't include steamy romance bits for adults.) In terms of being "like Eragon" it's probably the closest you can get since a lot of people notice that "Eragon" is very imitative of this series in many ways.
There are other series that I would recommend and I think you would enjoy even more. Others have mentioned the His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman, the Earthsea trilogy by Ursula K. McGuin, and Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. My favorite contemporary series is the "Abhorsen" trilogy by Garth Nix (Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen.) It's more like "his dark materials" than Eragon - more mature and complex, and a little "darker" in tone than Harry Potter.
If what you like about the Harry Potter series is the tone of the writing (smart and funny) I'd recommend getting into Lloyd Alexander whose writing is always witty and humourous and whose characters are really strong. He's best known for the Chronicles of Prydain series, which I love, but my favorite book by him is a non-series novel called "The first two lives of lukas-kasha." it's not as fantasy oriented as the others but it's a fantasy/thriller and very thought provoking.
You should also try "The blue sword" and "The Hero and the Crown" by Robin McKinley.
and thank you :)

Can anyone reccommend a new book series similar to Eragon? There's a BRAND NEW $.1.00 book based on the writer of Eragon and it's called " Dragon Rider " and it's so cool and I read the whole book and it may be a 500 page book, but it's a really good book and you'll love it! Good luck reading it!

If you like Eragon then you would like books wrote by Mercedies Lackey, Ann Mccaffry, David Edding or Robert Jordan. These are a few authors I would highly recomend. They have dragons, fantacy and magical wonders. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I second the "Artemis Fowl" comment. They're not as detailed as Lord of the Rings, and it's kind of a mix between mystery and fantasy. Plus they have larger print so they are easy to read in a couple days, besides being hard to put down! I'd definitely recommend them.

You should read Inkheart. It is also a trilogy and it is very good if you like characters from random stories. These random characters come into this book. It is a very good book.

Have you read C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia?
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is just the first book. After that there is Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (my favorite) The Silver Chair, The Horse and his Boy, The Last Battle and The Magician's Nephew.
Watch farscape and Dr. Who. The old ones are better!
well, ther first books in the "wheel of time" series are good, and will keep you readin for weeks.
Try Steven King's Dark Tower series.......it might be a little gory but it's more mature
Try the EArthsea Trilogy by Ursula Leguin.
You might like Midori Snyder's New Moon series. There is also the Shanarra series by Terry Brooks or something by Maggie Furey.
If you have never read the Dragonlance Chronicles.. I highly recommend you do.
Dragons of Autum Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragons of Spring Dawning..
A friend of mine's 12 year old son has read Eragon. He suggested a series called Dragon Singer.
Anything written by Robin Hobb or Meghan Lindholm is great reading!
Anything by Cornelia Funke
(i.e. the theif lord, inkheart, inkspell, dragon rider)
The "His Dark Materials" Series
"Escape from Memory"
Those are some of my favorites, all very fantasical and adventerous. Enjoy!
OMG READ THIS TRILOGY!!!!!!!
His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman
1.The Golden Compass, 2.The Subtle Knife, 3.The Amber Spyglass
These books are along the fantasy/scifi genre, but they are really original! They're basically about the idea of parallel universes, and how they came to be, and how to travel between them, and what the different worlds are like...and it goes into how the different universes fit into religion and death and such, so it really is a bit more mature than Harry Potter, especially when you get to the final book...it's kinda dark.
The main character is a young girl named Lyra (and her daemon) and she really develops very well over the series. I guess the reason they're such great books is that they're interesting, they have action/adventure, a little bit of romance, lots of originality...plus, by the third one, they really have you thinking (and I was even crying). Seriously. I freaking love these books.
