I am president of a book club, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good books. No specific genre, choose your favorites (and please nothing like Harry Potter, Narnia, and the like... they're good books but everyone has read them.)What are some top books to read for book club?
Bee Season, Goldberg
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Kesey
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
The Life of Pi
The Jungle, Sinclair
Elmer Gantry
King Fortis the BraveWhat are some top books to read for book club?
"Anthem" by Ayn Rand is a quick read and makes for some GREAT discussion afterward. I highly recommend it... I have read it quite a few times myself.
The Kite Runner; Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards; The Dive From Clausen's Pier, anyhitng by Jodi Picoult. Girl with the Pearl Earring by Tracey Chevalier. 12 Extraordinary Women(its about the 12 most powerful women of the Bible)What are some top books to read for book club?
Just a few suggestions:
Gilead - Marilynne Robinson
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff - Christopher Moore
Angle of Repose - Wallace Stegner
Life of Pi - Yann Martel
Lost in the Cosmos: The Last Self-Help Book - Walker Percy
Empire Falls - Richard Russo
Homo Faber - Max Frisch
For the Time Being - Annie Dillard
The Slave - Isaac Bashevis Singer
I've taught several of these in classes, and they're all quite popular and should provide much to talk about. Enjoy.
Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne and James Wakatsuki Houston
Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez
First They Killed my Father by Loung Ung (Just read this one 2 months ago. It was heart wrenching!)
Night by Elie Wiesel
For Young Adults
I suggest
1. Lovely Bones - About a girl who is raped and killed and watches everyone else continue life without her
2. Long Way Down - About four ppl who were about to commit suicide but they decide together to give it a few more months and see what happens
For Teenagers
I Suggest
1. Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie - About a freshman boy not ready for change as he enters high school, MUCH BETTER than you think, you'll be learning literature and not even know it as you read!
THIS ONE BEST OF BEST! 2. Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie - Let's just say as your heart is breaking you'll be laughing your head off at the humor, sarcsm, and antics
3. The Giver - Is this really a perfect Utopia?
.
Defintite reads are:
-Jane Eyre- Charlotte Bronte
-The Secret Life of Bees- Sue Monk Kidd
-Something Wicked This Way Comes- Ray Bradbury
-Lord of the Flies- ???
-Wurthering Heights- Emily Bronte
Great choices - I would suggest the next one be either Beloved or Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. I prefer Solomon. You could also try Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Mermaid Chair, The Memory Keeper's Daughter, The Kite Runner, As I Lay Dying ... I could go on and on. Pax - C.
