Sounds like a good idea. Just make sure you don't make the contributions too high or interest will drop off. Be sure to tell friends/family with interests similar to yours for starters. Most major bookstore chains have a public bulletin board advertising book clubs. Ask the manager of yours if he'd be willing to reserve you a spot for your flier. Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?
If everybody is contributing the same amount, it may be just as easy for them to pay for themselves. This often cuts back on some hard feelings as well. The outings could be book related too. For example, discussing Memoirs of a Geisha at a Japanese Restaurant or a trip to the museum for the DaVinci Code. Can anybody give pointers on starting a book club?
I'd ask my friends if they were interested...and ask them to ask their friends. I would not collect money, but would maybe do dinner/snacks/or wine at the host's house... what is served could complement the setting/plot of the book.
Also here's a link to a ton of book club resources...
