I was asked to participate in a book club. I'm excited about it, but I don't know too much about what to expect at the first meeting. I love the book and I'm almost finished. What do people do at these meetings? What do people do at a book club meeting?
We discuss the themes in the book, what the author meant to say, what the author actually did say, and whether we think it was well executed, or not. We discuss whether we agree with the author's premises.
If someone had a strong reaction (either loved or hated the book) then, talk about that, and why. Someone else is bound to disagree. That disagreement is the best part - hearing someone else's totally different take on the same book.
If we've read other books by the same author, then they usually come up in conversation.
The development of the characters, the plot, the choices the author made... whatever struck us as interesting or worth discussing.
Sometimes, we have authors attend (or teleconference) the meeting. The discussions are very different - more polite and more about the making of the book and the author's approach to writing - than when the author isn't present.
Every book club I've joined has been different from all the rest. The 'flavor' of the group depends on the individual members.
Sometimes, the groups have morphed into social clubs, where very little reading gets done. Sometimes, they have been 'all business', with no off-topic discussion allowed during the alloted book-discussion time.
My advice: read the book (take notes if something particularly strikes you) and go with an open mind. You'll know what to do when you get there. Don't be intimidated by others' opinions. You are the world's expert on your own opinion. If you hate a book that everyone else loves, say so. It will make the whole discussion better, deeper, and more interesting.
Enjoy!
They choose a particular book to read over a limit of given time, for instance, a month and then get back together at one place (maybe at one of the book club member's house) to talk and discuss about your point of view on the book.
You can talk anything that interests you or you may ask any questions that you wish to understand deeper about the story of the book.
But in your first meeting, just sit and listen to what they normally talk about an see what they do and you will get the idea. Have fun! What do people do at a book club meeting?
discuss the book maybe eat some snacks--call whoever invted you and ask if you should bring n e thing tell them its your first time in a book club
You discuss the number of chapters you have readWhat do people do at a book club meeting?
The best book club that I am in reads books that are difficult to understand. We read one or 2 chapters at a time; then We discuss what the author means and whether we agree or not with the author.
Many times we get into heated discussions but I learn a great deal. I love digging deep into a complicated book.
I work at a library and people tell me they simply discuss the book they were assigned to read. They just talk about what happened in it and how they feel about it.
thye talk bout wat they read and how was da book dats all
well what you do is you talk over the book
like what was your favorite part and what are the problems and how did they get resolved.
and ussually they have refreshments out so you can eat while you talk.
They usally at the first meeting talk about good books they like, and pick a book to read as a group, then you discuss it for the next couple meetings, repeat if nessacary.
they discuss the books they have read. eat and drink and socialize.
I run a readinig group that meets once a month. I usually try and do a bit of research on the author %26amp; the title to create a hand out, which gives everyone a bit of background. Then we just go round and say what we liked/disliked about the book. Some of the best meetings have been when there have been different opinions.
Don't be afraid of saying what you think, even if it is at odds with other people there. A first meeting can be daunting, but you are all there cos you enjoy reading.
Hope your meeting is fun!
They discuss books.
