I'm in Outside Sales and we have to read a selling book for our next sales meeting where the VP of Sales will give us a presentation and there will be a test. These meetings are boring enough!!! I thought it would be creative to stage it as a book club. The problem is I've never belonged to a book club, so I have no idea on how to structure it. Any suggestions? Do we just talk about our favorite part, or make up questions??How do you conduct a book club?
I belong to a book club. What we do is have a schedule of books to read, one per month. Each book is decided by a different member of the club. We usually have this done on a yearly basis so that we have about 12 books per year (Sometimes we miss December for holidays).
The person who chose the book is tasked to have some topics to talk about regarding the material and they will generally lead the session for that month. However, anyone can have topics to talk about. If you want to can talk about your favorite part, things that don't make sense, themes, why the book is deemed important in society etc.
Some book clubs I have been to, is very structured. They have officers like a president, vp, treasurer, secretary etc. In those book clubs, more often than not, the president dictates the pace of the discussion and what types of questions are asked and discussed etc. Usually each book club session is about 1-1.5 hours.
Hope that helps. How do you conduct a book club?
Use your imagination and your ingenuity to make the meeting less boring. You already have a good start. Send an email to the rest of the staff and suggest they each make up one test question they would like to see on the test. Of course, the questions should be on their favorite part and they should also provide the answer. Also you could suggest people pick you a section with which the disagree or can criticize.
Just get started and you will be surprised what other suggestions you get from the rest of the staff. If the meeting is made more interesting, it will greatly enhance the learning experience. It can also enhance sales.
