I have been in two types of book groups. The first we just talked about books we have read and make recommendations. It is good because you get exposed to different books and you don't have to worry about all getting a copy of the same book.
The other type is where you pick a book to read for the month and you talk about what you thought of the book. Usually one person finds discussion questions and leads the group. This way is good because you are all familiar with the material and can get a good discussion going.
Both ways can be good it just depends on what you want to get out of the group.What are they doing in book clubs?
Usually you will receive a book, read it, and then talk about it with the other people that read the book. In book clubs there is a possibility for your school, if they can afford to invite authors, to come and visit the school, sign books, and talk to the members.
All in all, join the club. It will look good on your education resume, and its tons of fun if you get the right people with the right mindset.

I am a member of 2 book clubs; one at the library and one with friends.
Library book club: The librarian/book club coordinator chooses a book, tells all the members which book to read and we read the book, then discuss it at our next meeting. There is usually light refreshments involved such as cookies and tea. And we meet at the library.
Friends' book club: We choose the next book together in a group and we meet up at one of the girls' houses once a month. Read the book, and discuss. There is also snacks involved, everyone usually brings something small like chips, cookies or what not.
Activities? No, but with my friends, we were thinking of maybe reading a book and then watching the movie of it at the next book club meeting lol.
It's fun and relaxing.
We share a laugh, swap stories, and make recommendations.
