Are 'book clubs' accessible, or very pretentious?

I have been to a small one a few times, and to be honest, the people there are extremely well read. I thought I was well read until I joined.



Does anyone have any experience of book clubs - pushing my luck, especially in London - and have you found them fulfilling or very exclusive?Are 'book clubs' accessible, or very pretentious?
I haven't found any :(



It is a shame, I have thought about joining one online or doing a book swap with someone so read one book each then swap then speak about the books. If you're ever up for that then let moi know. I have lots of books which I refuse to sell but it seems a shame to leave them read only by me.

I did do it with a friend but she was more into that real life abuse stories stuff.. and it isn't really my cup of tea. The rest of my friends don't read! Hmph! Or read really slowly.



I think it's not very accessible to younger people, which is a shame because young people like to read too! The one by me was all people well older than me.. 50+. It can be a bit daunting to give your opinion when you're the minority. However daft that may sound!
