Do you find joining book clubs to always be disappointing?

I have joined about 3 and am not going to try again. I never found the right group I clicked with and conversation always felt so stilted and awkward.Do you find joining book clubs to always be disappointing?
I joined the "main" one several years ago and although you get a few 'discounted' books at a good savings to start with, after a month or two they're nothing but trouble with arguments and accusations that you haven't paid (when you have proff from your bank!) - and that was apart from all the unwanted and wrong books that regularly arrived - so on the whole, my experience with them is MOST DISAPPOINTING !
Always. Long ago, before the web or even TV, it was a great idea. The future is more and accurate documentaries and things like Masterpiece Theater. The BS of modern Hollywood are dying on the vine. Foreign production is vastly superior in every respect. Hollywood rarely produces anything worthwhile. Americans are tired of the novelty of award shows and football games. Fans are losing interest. Everything is dumbing down. We lack the talent and are tired of the Hollywood agenda and philosophy. They have completed their heyday and they are going by the way. With few exceptions, the churn out garbage and will run out of fans and consumers year by year. They just do not get it. Crime, violence, nonsense, and downright immoral bs is all they have to offer.Do you find joining book clubs to always be disappointing?
I've had that problem too. I think that part of my problem is that I was trying to recreate the atmosphere of my college English course discussions. If you put 15 English Lit. majors in a room and ask them to talk about a book, it's more a challenge trying to get people to shut up. In book clubs, I felt like everyone was so shy and no one really wanted to lead the conversation. It was disappointing to say the least. I suppose the right thing to say would be to keep trying until the chemistry is there, but 3 clubs sounds like a lot. Maybe just focus on finding some new shopping buddies to hang out with socially and find a good online forum to talk about books?
in which case why not analyse what you dislike of the clubs you have joined

work out what you think is missing

work out what you think is required to make a successfull club

...and go organise one yourself

or better yet fidn a couple of mates with a similar interest and spread the organising, spread the risk and set one up togetherDo you find joining book clubs to always be disappointing?
I never got on with the book groups where you actually meet, but I have got on really well with online book groups. I belong to a few yahoo groups. They are themed, paranormal romance, historical romance etc.
Yeah. It seems that they always choose really average books or ones that aren't your taste. I was asked what books I read and I said I was into American plays. The looks I got from our leader...she teaches English but she doesn't seem to like a lot of classics.

I guess we just have more unusual tastes.
